So my ex guy friend contacts me out of the blue. What do you think he wants?

So the reason I call him a guy friend is cause we were never exactly official in college. I mean we dated off and on for 2 years and once he invited me over and cooked for me, I met his friends and hung out with them hundreds of times, he accompanied me to family functions, and also invited me to his summer home. For the longest time I thought he was interested in me but was kind of shy. He was the type of guy that would text me at random times of the day to say he was thinking of me and when we went out he would but me flowers. As the day was approaching that we were supposed to graduate from college I told him that I had feelings for him and that I thought he should know. He in turn told me he thought I was a great person but didn't feel the same way which left me crushed. I also found out that he was serious about a freshman. I decided from that day on to cut all communication with him cause he in my mind was a liar and a player. Yesterday being Easter I got this random text from him saying happy easter. Now mind you I haven't heard from him in two years. I thought maybe he was trying to be friendly so I decided to ask him how things were and what he was up to and how his friends were. We texted back and forth on and off for 3 hours where he finally said well I just wanted to wish you a Happy Easter, have a nice day. I said you too take care. Now what was his purpose for doing that? Honestly I was debating about a week ago to erase his number. Why not wish me a Happy Easter last year or a Merry Xmas? It's so confusing. Why did he have to reappear? Remember we were never a couple.
