Do I give my toddler mucinex at night or wait til the morning?

My 2 year old has a horrible cough and I took him to the doctor but the doctor said that he will be fine and he will just need to cough it up. So he did not prescribe me anything for him...he is so congested but I just cant stand by and not do anything for him when he is gagging on this mucus..
