Question regarding atmospheric pressure...?

I know we do not have the technology to go sub-terrain because of the over whelming pressure. What if there was a way to maybe dig a huge hole 1 mile in diameter and 2 miles deep. standing at the bottom of the hole, would the pressure still effect the body? or is it the actual debris that rests on top of the tunnel what causes the pressure?
